All Local Authorities are legally obliged to consider the Gender Equality Duty when planning their budgets and deciding their level of service provision. However, there has been little guidance on what this duty means in practice. This has opened local authorities to the possibility of legal challenge e.g. the EHRC threat to sue one in four local authorities. This seminar will explore what the Gender Equality Duty is and what it requires local authorities to do.
The session will begin with a presentation by the EHRC on what the Gender Equality Duty is. We will then explore the range of voluntary and charitable groups working in the field. We will also discuss how to engage with vulnerable groups and provide tailored services. In the afternoon there will be a roundtable discussion in which leading authorities will describe the services they provide and what the duty means to them. We will finish with a workshop in which we will seek to define what the Gender Equality Duty entails based on the days presentations.
